The history of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is written not only through famous champions and foundation dogs, but also through the breeding bitches whose descendants continue to appear in pedigrees many generations later.

Homerbrent Puppetina is an interesting example of this.

A Ruby Cavalier born in 2009, Puppetina was bred by K. M. Coaker and is recorded in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club's voluntary MRI database as residing in Australia, with R. J. Puppetina's pedigree becomes particularly interesting through her daughter, Ch. Kabob Garbo, who was awarded her Australian Championship in 2014. Dogs Queensland records Kabob Garbo as born on 16 December 2012, sired by Kabob Bogart and out of Homerbrent Puppetina (Imp UK). (Dogs Queensland, 2014)

The line subsequently continued into New Zealand, where Aust Ch Kabob Garbo (Imp-Aust) appears as the dam of Vintique Dark Chieptain, demonstrating the movement of this particular Cavalier family between Australia and New Zealand. (Dogs New Zealand, 2018)

Her Pedigree

Puppetina's pedigree brings together the Homerbrent and Ttitian breeding lines.

Her sire, Ttitian Puppeteer of Homerbrent, was a Ruby Cavalier bred by Mrs Barbara Martin. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club's MRI database records him as born on 6 May 2004, with Ned Ch Homerbrent Lowena Quizzical as his sire and Ttitian Marionette as his dam. Ttitian Puppeteer of Homerbrent was also exhibited successfully. At the 2005 Richmond Championship Show, he was placed second in Junior Dog. The contemporary judge's critique described him as a masculine Ruby of good size, with good pigment, dark eyes and good movement. (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club, 2005)

Puppetina's dam, Homerbrent PennyWise, was a Blenheim bitch bred by Mrs K. M. Coaker. The Cavalier Club's MRI database records her as born on 1 April 2004, with Pennygown Penmarric as her sire and Homerbrent Dolly Daydream as her dam. (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club, n.d.-c)

PennyWise is also recorded in the Club's voluntary MRI database. Together, these records establish Puppetina's immediate pedigree and provide a documented link to established British breeding lines.

Ttitian Puppeteer of Homerbrent

The paternal side of Puppetina's pedigree is particularly interesting because Ttitian Puppeteer of Homerbrent was himself a documented show dog.

Born in 2004, he was bred by Barbara Martin and was owned by K. M. Coaker. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club records his pedigree as:

He was recorded as JW ShCM and competed at championship level.

His inclusion in Puppetina's pedigree therefore connects her to a Ruby dog with a documented British show history.

Homerbrent PennyWise

On Puppetina's maternal side was Homerbrent PennyWise, a Blenheim bitch born on 1 April 2004.

The Cavalier Club's MRI database records:

The presence of both Puppetina and her dam in the MRI database provides an interesting documented health-screening connection within this maternal family. However, the Club is very clear about how its MRI database should be interpreted.

The database records the names of Cavaliers whose MRI information has been voluntarily supplied, but the actual MRI results are confidential between the veterinary surgeon and the owner. The Club specifically states that no conclusion should be drawn from the inclusion or omission of a dog from the database. (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club, n.d.-a). Consequently, Puppetina's inclusion in the database should not be interpreted as evidence that she was either MRI clear or affected.

Ch. Kabob Garbo

A Champion Daughter

Perhaps the most significant documented aspect of Homerbrent Puppetina's breeding history is her daughter, Ch. Kabob Garbo.

Dogs Queensland's 2014 championship records identify:

Kabob Garbo's own pedigree also brings together interesting Cavalier lines. Her sire, Kabob Bogart, was another Cavalier recorded in the Cavalier Club's voluntary MRI database. He was a Black and Tan dog born on 15 September 2005, bred and owned by R. J. Crapp. His recorded parents were Eng Ch Rheinvelt Ringold Von Salador and Aust Ch Harana Bardot. Puppetina therefore produced a champion daughter from a pedigree that itself included established and titled Cavaliers.

The Line Continues to New Zealand

The story of Puppetina's descendants does not end with Kabob Garbo's Australian Championship.

Dogs New Zealand records Aust Ch Kabob Garbo (Imp-Aust) as the dam of Vintique Dark Chieptain, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel born in New Zealand on 7 October 2018. His sire was New Zealand and Australia Ch Coloora Rumors Fly (Imp-Aust). (Dogs New Zealand, 2018)

The New Zealand records demonstrate that Vintique Dark Chieptain subsequently competed successfully in the show ring.

At various New Zealand championship shows, he was recorded competing in Cavalier King Charles Spaniel classes, including achieving placements and Challenge Certificate-level recognition. (Dogs New Zealand, n.d.)

This provides a documented example of the continuation of Puppetina's maternal line from Australia into New Zealand.
